Graduate Students

Our graduate program offers educational and research opportunities in a variety of materials science fields, many of which include other engineering, science and medical disciplines.

Master's Degrees in Materials Science & Engineering

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering offers two distinct graduate degree programs.

  • The program leading to the Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering (M.S. MSE) is a thesis-based program designed to prepare students for research and development and further study at the doctoral level.
  • The program leading to the Master of Engineering in Materials Science and Engineering (M.Engr. MSE) is a non-thesis program with a focus on professional development.

Both programs are interdisciplinary and involve faculty members from the College of Engineering and the College of Arts and Sciences with expertise in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, chemistry, and biology.

Forms:

This section contains forms that students will need to fill out at various times during the program. Consult with your advisor if you have any questions about these forms.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The deadlines in the Academic Calendar are incorrect. Please see the revised schedule of deadlines for turning in these forms. (as of February 2006)

button  Program Development Form

All graduate students should work with their advisor/department to fill out the Program Development Form in the first semester of study. The Program Development Form will serve as a plan of study for the student.

button  Application for Admission to Candidacy
A student may apply for admission to candidacy after completion of all MSE core courses (MSE 505, MSE 508, PHYS 515, PHYS 523). A properly completed Admission to Candidacy form includes the exact final list of courses that are to be applied to meet the credit requirements of the graduate degree program. The form must be submitted no later than the semester prior to the semester of graduation (see exact deadlines in the academic calendar). A student must first be admitted to candidacy before scheduling or participating in a final oral or written examination.

button  Completion of Graduate Degree Form– This form is no longer needed, instead please log in to BroncoWeb then click on Student, Registrar, and Apply for Graduation.

button  Report of Culminating Activity
The Report of Culminating Activity form should be initiated by the student prior to their culminating activity. The form should then be submitted to the student’s advisor so that the advisor and supervisory committee can note the completion of the culminating activity. Students should be aware that the deadline for completion of culminating activities is about half-way through the semester in which the student chooses to graduate (see exact deadlines in the academic calendar).
