  • Materials Science and Engineering graduate students Jen Cole and Lisa Warner gave presentations on their research at the 3rd annual Idaho Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network Research Conference at Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho. The titles and list of co-authors can be found at the following URL. Both Jen and Lisa work in the field of biomaterials in the research groups of Professors J. Oxford (Biology) and Bill Knowlton (ECE & MSE). [August 2004]

  • Richard (Ricki) Southwick III (ECE Grad student) has been selected as a 2004 Micron Graduate Scholar. Ricki is a graduate student in Prof. Bill Knowlton's research group. [August 2004]

  • Betsy Cheek (ECE Grad student) presented a paper, "Investigation of Circuit-level stress and its Effect on CMOS Inverter Operationand MOSFET Characteristics", haat the the IEEE International Reliability Physics Symposium on April 27, 2004 in Phoenix, Arizona. The co-authors were Nate Stutzke (Univ. Colorado, Boulder), Santosh Kumar (CM Innovations), Jake Baker (ECE), Amy Moll (MS&E) and Bill Knowlton (ECE & MS&E). The paper has been published in the 42nd annual 2004 IEEE IRPS proceedings, pp. 110-116. Betsy Cheek is the senior graduate student in Prof. Bill Knowlton's research group. [April 2004]

  • Don Plumlee (ME PhD Candidate, U of I), presented a poster on April 27th at the International Microelectronics and packaging Society (IMAPS) Ceramic Interconnect Technology: The Next Generation II & Table Top Exhibition in Denver Colorado. Don works in the research group of Prof. Amy Moll - faculty and Interim Chair of MS&E and Prof. Judi Steciak - ME faculty at U of Idaho. [April 2004]

  • Tim Lawrence (ECE Grad student) presented his paper, Electrical characterization of Through-Wafer Interconnects, at the 2004 IEEE Workshop on Microelectronics and Electron Devices (WMED), on pp. 99-102 of the proceedings. Tim's co-authors are Sean Donovan (MSE), Bill Knowlton (ECE & MSE), J. Rush-Byers (MSE), and Amy Moll (MSE). Tim works in the research group of Prof. Bill Knowlton. [April 2004]

  • Don Plumlee (ME PhD Candidate, U of I), won the best paper award for his paper, "Development of a Micro-Nozzle and Ion Mobility Spectrometer in LTCC" co-authored with Judi Steciak and Amy Moll, in the Packaging and MEMs session at the 2004 IEEE Workshop on Microelectronics and Electron Devices (WMED), on pp. 95-98 of the proceedings. In addition, he recently passed his preliminary exams for his PhD. Don works in the research group of Prof. Amy Moll - faculty and Interim Chair of MS&E and Prof. Judi Steciak - ME faculty at U of Idaho. [April 2004]

  • Dorian Kiri (ECE senior) was named as one of Boise State's Top Ten Scholars by the Boise State University Alumni Association (see separate press releases: 1, 2, 3 ). As mentioned in the press release, Top Ten Scholars are chosen from among the top 10 percent of Boise State’s graduating class for 2003-04. They are selected based on academic performance, recommendation from college deans and club and research activities. Each student names a Boise State professor who was particularly influential to the student’s success. Dorian performs MS&E related research in the research group of Prof. Bill Knowlton - faculty of MS&E and ECE . [April 2004]

  • Jen Cole, a Senior in ME, received 3rd third place in the "Old Guard Technical Oral Presentation Competition" at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Region VIII Student Conference. This region includes all universities within OR, MT, ID, & WA. Boise State University Student ASME chapter was the most successful school at the conference, bringing home $900 in total prize money. Jen performs MS&E related research in the lab of Prof. Bill Knowlton - faculty of MS&E and ECE. [April 2004]

  • Patrick Nagler, an ECE undergraduate student, was one of four recipients of the Micron Scholarship. Patrick is involved in MS&E related research in the research group of Prof. Bill Knowlton - faculty of MS&E and ECE.  [April 2004]

  • Dorian Kiri (ECE undergrad) presented his paper, Heavy Metal Chem-FET Sensors Fabricated Using Nanoliter Electrochemical Deposition of Polymer, at the 2004 Pittsburg Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy. This conference has an attendance of over 10,000 attendees with several Nobel Laureates giving plenary sessions. Dorian was told by the Session Chair and several of the audience that they were very impressed by an undergraduate student involved in the type of research he presented. Co-authors on the presentation are Bill Knowlton, Dale Russell (Chemistry & Affiliate MS&E faculty), Jon Scaggs (Chemistry), Ryan Meyer (MS&E) and Lisa Warner (MS&E).   • Dorian Kiri, a senior in Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been selected for membership in the Founders' Leadership Society (one of 28 students throughout Boise State) This is a highly competitive and prestigious award. Dorian performs his MS&E related research in the lab of Prof. Bill Knowlton - graduate affiliate faculty of MS&E. (February 2004)

  • Jen Cole, a Senior in ME, was on the channel six 10 o'clock news Wednesday, January 21, 2004. While participating in the "Day with the Legislature" at the capitol building, Channel 6 News interviewed Jen about her research concerning the study of cartilage replacement and its possible/probable implications at the societal level. Examples include helping persons with acute cartilage injuries as well as those with chronic diseases such as osteoarthritis. Ms. Cole performs MS&E related research in the lab of Prof. Bill Knowlton - faculty of MS&E and ECE. [January 2004]

  • Betsy Cheek (ECE Grad student) presented a paper entitled Effects of Circuit-Level Stress on Inverter Performance and MOSFET Characteristics at the International IEEE Integrated Reliability Workshop (IRW). Co-authors on the paper are Nate Stuzke (CU Boulder), S. Kumar (Cypress Semiconductor), R.J. Baker (BSU-ECE), A. Moll (BSU-ME) and W.B. Knowlton (BSU-ECE). Betsy also presented a poster at IRW entitled Investigation of Multiple Waveform Pulse Voltage Stress (MWPVS) Technique in Ultra-Thin Oxides. Michael Ogas (ECE undergrad) was the lead author with co-authors R. J. Southwick III (ECE undergrad), B. J. Cheek (ECE Grad), C. E. Lawrence (ECE Grad), S. Kumar (Cypress Semiconductor), A. Haggag (Motorolla), R. J. Baker (BSU-ECE), W. B. Knowlton (BSU-ECE). Betsy performs MS&E related research in the lab of Prof. Bill Knowlton - graduate affiliate faculty of MS&E.   • Zak Clark and Jen Cole, undergraduate students in ME, were quoted in the Idaho Statesman about the Micron Foundation gift of $2 Million to support a Materials Science Program. Both students perform MS&E related research in the lab of Prof. Bill Knowlton (ECE), MS&E graduate affiliate faculty. (August 29, 2003).

  • Megan Kane, a graduate student in Materials Science and Engineering, received a NASA Idaho Space Grant Consortium Fellowship for the 2003-2004 academic school year. Megan's research focus is in nanomaterials fabrication and she is working with Profs. Bill Knowlton and Amy Moll who are MS&E graduate affiliate faculty. (August 2003)

  • The front page of the Idaho Statesman contained the photograph of Dean Cheryl Schrader and Zak Clark, an undergraduate in Mechanical Engineering. The article focused on Idaho higher education and industry growth in which Dean Schrader was quoted. Zak performs MS&E related research in the lab of Prof. Bill Knowlton in which the picture was taken. Knowlton is a graduate affiliate faculty member of MS&E. (August 25, 2003)

  • ECE undergraduates Nate Stutzke, Dorian Kiri and Ricki Southwick presented their materials science and engineering related research at the 2003 Micron Foundation Summer Technical Conference in August. The three undergraduates perform research in the research lab of Prof. Bill Knowlton. Nate Stutzke was awarded Best Poster in his session. Nate will pursue his graduate studies in Electrical Engineering at University of Colorado, Boulder and NIST starting in Fall 2003. (August 2003)

  • ME undergraduates Jen Cole and Seth Kuhlman received 2003 BRIN Summer Research Fellowships to perform biomaterials research. Kuhlman will work in the C-MEMs research lab of Prof. Amy Moll. Cole will work the research lab of Prof. Bill Knowlton and is a collaborative effort between Knowlton and J. Oxford. All three faculty are graduate affiliate faculty in MS&E. (May 2003)

  • ECE undergraduates Nate Stutzke, Dorian Kiri and Ricki Southwick were awarded 2003 Micron Campus Engineering Research Program Summer Scholarships. They will be performing materials related research in the research lab of Prof. Bill Knowlton (ECE), graduate affiliate faculty in MS&E. (May 2003)

  • A research paper entitled “Magnetic Properties of Ferrihydrite Nanoparticles doped Ni, Mo and Ir” co-authored by MS&E graduate affiliate faculty member Alex Punnoose (Physics) and undergraduate student T. Phanthavadyhas (Physics) has been accepted for publication in Physical Review B. (March 2004)

  • MS&E graduate affiliate faculty member and principle investigator (PI) Alex Punnoose (Physics) and fellow MS&E graduate affiliate faculty members  and Co-PIs Charles Hanna (Physics), Bill Knowlton (MS&E & ECE), Amy Moll (MS&E) and Don Warner (Chemistry) were awarded  $70,000 by the NSF-Idaho-EPSCoR Instrumentation program. The title of the grant is “Upgrading the Magnetization Measurement Capabilities of an Existing Magnetometer”. Acquisition of this system is in progress now. (February 2004)

  • MS&E graduate affiliate faculty member Bill Knowlton (ECE) is a co-author of 2 papers and 2 posters presented at the International IEEE Integrated Reliability Workshop (IRW). See this link for more information. (October 20-23, 2003)

  • Amy Moll, Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering and graduate affiliate faculty in MS&E, gave an invited talk at the 204th Meeting of the Electrochemical Society in Orlando, Florida. The title of Prof. Moll's talk is MEMs devices in LTCC. (October 16, 2003)

  • Bill Knowlton, Assistant Professor in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering and graduate affiliate faculty in MS&E gave an invited talk at the annual INRA Subsurface Symposium in Salt Lake City, Utah. The title of his talk was Fabrication of ChemFETs for Uranium Detection in Geological Subsurface Groundwater. (October 7, 2003)

  • Dr. Amy Moll, Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering and graduate affiliate faculty in MS&E, was interviewed by Boise State Radio about the Micron Foundation Gift to support a Materials Science and Engineering program. (August 28, 2003)

  • Bill Knowlton, Assistant Professor in ECE and graduate affiliate faculty in MS&E, was awarded an NIH BRIN Seed Grant at the BRIN Recognition Banquet. The grant award is over $76,000 (including equipment) over a year period of time. The title of the grant is Atomic Force Microscopy Characterization of Bioengineered Cartilage Composite Structure.  This work is in collaboration with Prof. Julia T. Oxford (Biology & MS&E graduate affiliate faculty) and Rex Oxford (Engineering). (August 11, 2003)

  • An NSF MRI/RUI grant was awarded to Profs. Alex Punnoose (Physics), Julia T. Oxford (Biology), Susan E. Shadle (Chemistry), and William B. Knowlton (ECE). The grant award is for $338,000 over two years. The title of the grant is Acquisition of an EPR Spectrometer for Collaborative Research and Materials Science Education. Profs.  Punnoose, Oxford, and Knowlton are graduate affiliate faculty in MS&E. (August 1, 2003)
