The Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program

The Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) is a ten week summer research opportunity for undergraduate Sophomores, Juniors & Seniors, and Graduate students, under the guidance of a mentor, at a participating Navy Laboratory. The stipend amounts for the program are $5,250.00 for Sophomores, $7,880.00 for Junior and Senior undergraduate students and $10,500.00 for graduate students. U.S. citizenship required; Permanent residents accepted at certain labs.

The online application is now open at https://nreip.asee.org/ and must be completed by January 6, 2012. All accompanying documents (official transcripts and reference letters) are due by January 6, 2012.

NASA Internship Opportunities- November 14

Helpful hints with your resume, application and interview for obtaining internships with NASA!   Veronica Seyl, Education Program Manager at JSC, will connect via Skype from Houston to help students refine their resumes and applications when applying for a NASA internship.  Interview tips and updates to the new application system at NASA will be discussed and students are welcome to ask questions pertaining to internships. ·

Idaho National Laboratory Internships- November 15, 2011

Todd Johnson, Internship Programs Specialist at Idaho National Laboratory (INL), will be on campus Tuesday, November 15  to consult with students about internship and career opportunities.

Career Center-
1:00-3:00pm- Drop-in time for students to consult with Todd Johnson. Learn how to create a skills based resume to apply to INL and other Department of Energy national laboratories. Learn about opportunities at the Idaho National Laboratory and Department of Energy Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship program.

ENGR 110-
3:40-4:40pm Presentation on internship and career opportunities at INL. Former INL interns will also attend.
4:40-5:50pm Q&A with Todd Johnson and BSU former interns. Receive assistance with application strategies.

Campus Read- Human Subjects Research Panel

Get involved in the Campus Read in a way that is exceptionally meaningful to STEM. This year’s Campus Read, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” raises questions about the ethics of past and future medical research.

The Research, Respect and Review panel will address how Boise State handles research involving human subjects.

ALEKS- Free Math Learning Module

Need to brush up your math skills for the upcoming Spring term? We have an online Math Learning Module available at no charge. We recommend you take advantage of this module if:

  • It has been more than 1 year since you took a math course and you want to refresh your skills or
  • Your math placement score qualifies you for a lower level math course than you want to take and you want to study math before taking the COMPASS math placement test.

This course will be taught in an integrated lecture and lab format. Components of the course are activity- and discussion-based with minimal lecture. A large portion of class time will involve students working in cooperative learning groups through activities outlined in the text.

Activities will include:

  • The Nature of Science: explorations, looking for the unexpected opinion vs fact: Why was Pluto killed?
  • Observations vs. Inferences and Probability: Win at Cards!
  • Measurements: systems of measurements, units and dimensional analysis, accuracy, precision, and instrument uncertainty: Were you really going 70 mph? But officer . . . .

U.S. Department of Energy Scholars Programs

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Scholars Program provides opportunities at various DOE sites to gain first-hand experience and training in the fields of science, engineering, technology, and related professions that support the mission of the U.S. Department of Energy.

Locations: Various locations across U.S.

Duration: Summer Term of 10 weeks (May – August);  terms may be extended

Deadline: Applications accepted October 15 through November 15.

Benefi ts: Stipends up to $650 per week depending on academic status.

ENGR 120- FUSE: Solve a Real-World Engineering Problem!

What is ENGR 120-FUSE?

  • Experience the creativity, challenge and rewards in solving a real-world engineering problem.
  • Develop problem solving and critical thinking skills by working with your client solving their specific problem.
  • Practice skills necessary to be an effective engineer including teamwork, communication and project management.

Enter class number 15289 or 15290. For help while signing up for classes, raise your hand and a Peer Advisor will assist you.
ENGR 120 is a required engineering course for civil, electrical, mechanical, and materials science engineering majors. The FUSE section includes the opportunity to solve a real-world design problem.

Dec. 15, 2011: December Hard Hat Ceremony for new grads. The ceremony will be held in the Lookout Room of the Student Union from 6:00-7:00. The CM Alumni Chapter will make the traditional presentation of the orange hard hats to new graduates. The Party After the Ceremony will be held at Beside Bardenay at 6th and Grove, downtown Boise.
