Important Start of Term Notice from COEN ITS

EVERYONE Folder Purged Friday 1/6/2012

The “everyone” folder (the temporary file storage area on the “W” drive) is cleaned out prior to each semester, or whenever it is low on space.  It will be purged this Friday, 1/6/2012.

Console Machines “Thawed”

The teaching consoles in COEN classrooms have been configured for the Spring Semester.  The Windows computers next week will be in a “thawed” state, allowing users to save profiles and settings on the console machines.

Instructors are encouraged to login to the Windows computers in the teaching consoles between Monday 1/09/2012 through Friday 1/13/2012 at 12:00pm (noon) in order save user-specific application and desktop settings.  Doing so will save time during the semester, since you will not need to re-establish these settings each time you login as yourself to the computer.

Location of Classroom Consoles:

ENGR 238

ENGR 313

ENGR 314

LAB Account Hours

The accounts will not be available from 9pm to 6am. During this time frame students, faculty and staff may login to any of the lab workstations using their own BroncoWeb credentials.

Each lab’s generic account will only be accessible in the specific lab it was created for (ex: ET212 will only be available in the ET212 lab).

Fluid Power Scholars Program:  A Paid Industry Summer Internship!

The Fluid Power Scholars Program is a collaborative effort between the Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power (CCEFP) and companies in the fluid power industry who are corporate members of the CCEFP. This highly selective summer program identifies and connects the very best undergraduate engineering students across the United States to the fluid power industry with the purpose of training the next-generation of fluid power leaders.

This is a highly competitive program, open to undergraduates who have successfully completed at least two years in an accredited engineering program in the United States. The Scholars program begins with an intensive three and 1/2 day instructional program in fluid power, taught at the Fluid Power Institute at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE), and follows with internships in the fluid power industry. The Fluid Power “Bootcamp” at MSOE will be held May 21-24, 2012.  Students should expect to spend 10-11 weeks as a intern in their host company.  Up to ten undergraduate students will be selected as Fluid Power Scholars by a committee of faculty and industry representatives. In addition to their paid internships, scholars will receive stipends for travel and living expenses associated with their work at MSOE.

Summer 2012 Application Deadline:  Friday, February 3, 2012

Funding Opportunities

NSF: Cyber-Physical Systems  (CPS)

Cyber-physical systems (CPS) are engineered systems that are built from and depend upon the synergy of computational and physical components.  Emerging CPS will be coordinated, distributed, and connected, and must be robust and responsive.  The CPS of tomorrow will need to far exceed the systems of today in capability, adaptability, resiliency, safety, security, and usability.  Examples of the many CPS application areas include the smart electric grid, smart transportation, smart buildings, smart medical technologies, next-generation air traffic management, and advanced manufacturing.  CPS will transform the way people interact with engineered systems, just as the Internet transformed the way people interact with information.  However, these goals cannot be achieved without rigorous systems engineering.
