Future City Volunteers Needed on Jan. 21
COEN is hosting the annual Future City Competition, on Saturday January 21 at the SUB and we need student volunteers!
- We need about 6 presentation and model judges from 8am-12noon – see details below.
- We also need one or two people to help give segway rides from 8-1:30pm
- We need 2 or 3 runners and 2 data input helpers.
We’ve had an amazing turnout of schools participating this year…31. But the extra schools means I need to find extra volunteers to help judge the presentation and models on competition day, January 21, 2012 at BSU. Below are judging descriptions of each with the approximate time commitment for each one.
Model Judge: You will be placed on a judging team with two others to evaluate the creativity, attractiveness, accuracy, and moving components of the students’ models. You will be provided score sheets, a scoring rubric, tape measures, rulers, and all other necessary items to complete the evaluation. Approximate time commitment: January 21, 2012 from 8am-noon.
Presentation Judge: You will be placed on a judging team with two others to evaluate how well the students explain the design and function of their futuristic city during their 5-7 minute presentation. The judging team must ask the students at least three questions after their presentation. You will be provided score sheets, a scoring rubric, and a stopwatch. Approximate time commitment: January 21, 2012 from 8am-noon.
Still Need:
- Approx. 3 Model Judges
- Approx. 15 Presentation Judges
Future City will provide morning refreshments and lunch for all of the judges.
If you are able to help on January 21, 2012, please email Leandra Aburusa at laburusa@boisestate.edu.
In your response please include whether you want to judge models or presentations, your company name and if you have any abbreviations after your name (i.e. PE, LEED AP) that you’d like included in the program. If you would like more information please visit either website listed below:

2012 NASA Student Airborne Research Program (SARP) – June 17 – Aug. 12
The NASA Airborne Science Program invites highly motivated junior and senior undergraduate and early graduate students to apply for participation in the NASA Student Airborne Research Program (SARP 2012). SARP provides students with hands-on research experience in all aspects of a major scientific campaign, from detailed planning on how to achieve mission objectives to formal presentation of results and conclusions to peers and others.
Participants will fly onboard the NASA P-3B aircraft where they will assist in the operation of instruments to sample and measure atmospheric gases and to image land and water surfaces in multiple spectral bands. Along with airborne data collection, students will participate in taking measurements at field sites. Students will work in multi-disciplinary teams to study surface, atmospheric, and oceanographic processes. Each student will develop his/her own individual research project.
Instrument and flight preparations, and the research flights themselves, will take place at NASA’s Dryden Aircraft Operations Facility, in Palmdale, CA. Post-flight data analysis and interpretation will take place at the University of California, Irvine. Applicants must have a strong academic background in any of the physical, chemical, or biological sciences, or engineering and an interest in applying their background to the study of the Earth system. We especially encourage applications from students majoring in Earth, environmental or atmospheric sciences and related disciplines.
SARP participants will receive round-trip travel to California, housing and transportation during the 8-week program, a $3,000 stipend and a $2,500 meals allowance.
Applications received by Jan. 20, 2012 will be considered for early acceptance.
