Weight Training in Older Adults
The process of aging is associated with declines
in both physiological and psychological function that lead to the onset
of
chronic illness or morbidity. Research suggests older adults benefit
from strength training through improved muscular strength, functional
ability, overall health, and quality of life. Unfortunately, there is
an increased likelihood for members of this population to undergo extended
periods of detraining due to illness and injury. Current research on
the effects of detraining on muscular strength in trained individuals is
inconclusive and inconsistent. The purpose of this investigation was
to assess the effects of detraining on previous strength gains in the older
adult and determine if the degree of detraining was influenced by training
intensity.
