S M Naziur Mahmud, a graduate student in the Civil Engineering Department was recently awarded a scholarship through Itasca Consulting Group’s Educational Partnership Program (IEP). The IEP program represents an international scholarship competition where a graduate student working under the supervision of a faculty member proposes a novel research idea to be studied using one of Itasca’s numerical modeling tools.
Once selected, the student receives a complimentary license for the numerical modeling tool of interest, and a chance to work directly with a mentor from ITASCA to tackle challenges in the proposed research topic. The scholarship is renewable for subsequent years upon review of the tasks accomplished during the first year. The title of Naziur’s research project is: “Using the Discrete Element Method to Evaluate the Effect of Polyurethane Grouting on Railroad Ballast Behavior during Tamping Maintenance”. Naziur joined Boise State in January 2015, and is working with Dr. Deb Mishra towards his Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering.
