ASDSO Announces 2007-2008 Dam Safety Scholarship Winners

The Association of State Dam Safety Officials is pleased to announce the
winners of its 2007-2008 Dam Safety Scholarships for Senior Undergraduates.
The ASDSO Scholarship Committee chose two outstanding scholars-Josh Goodall,
a Civil Engineering major at Oregon State University, and Salvador Varela, a
Construction Management major at Boise State University-from a field of
twenty-five well-qualified applicants representing universities across the
United States.
ASDSO Scholarship Chairman John Moyle (New Jersey Dam Safety Bureau Manager)
noted, "Both Josh and Sal demonstrate strong academic and leadership
abilities and have had valuable practical experiences. We are proud to
present them with ASDSO scholarships, and look forward to working with them
as colleagues in dam safety."
This is the sixteenth year of the ASDSO Scholarship Program, which annually
awards up to $10,000 to outstanding undergraduates who plan to enter the dam
safety profession. Each of this year's recipients received $5,000 for
educational expenses, a one-year ASDSO membership, and a trip to Dam Safety
2007, ASDSO's national conference, held September 9-13 in Austin, Texas.
Josh Goodall, Oregon State University
Josh Goodall, of Bend, Oregon, is a Civil Engineering major and Teacher's
Assistant at Oregon State University. For over three years, Josh interned
at Kennedy/Jenks Consultants, working on a variety of water and wastewater
projects, including storm drainage for the City of the Dalles. Josh is an
active student member of ASCE, and served as Analysis Captain for the ASCE
Steel Bridge Competition. He is membership chair of Chi Epsilon Honor
Society, team captain in the COCC Club basketball league and Praise and
Worship leader at his church. Josh's scholastic honors include OSU
Foundation, SMPS and COCC scholarships. Following his undergraduate
studies, Josh plans to obtain a Master's degree in Structural Engineering,
with a focus on large infrastructure designs, including bridges and dams.
Salvador Varela, Boise State University
Salvador Varela, a native of Rexburg, Idaho, is majoring in Construction
Management at Boise State University. For the past two summers, he has
assisted in development of estimates for Washington Group International
projects, including Olmsted Dam. Sal plays an active role at his school and
in his community, serving as Team Leader Estimator for the Marine
competition of the Associated Schools of Construction; former treasurer and
current vice president of the Construction Management Association; student
member of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers; intramural
athletics team captain; and community service volunteer. Among Sal's honors
are: Sigma Lambda Chi Honor Society; faculty nominee to attend 2007
Leadership Quest as Emerging Student Leader; College of Engineering Dean's
List with Highest Honors; 2006 Construction Management Association of
America National Scholarship; Golden Key International Honor Society
recognition as being in the top 15% of class rankings based on cumulative
GPA; National Society of Collegiate Scholars for Outstanding Academic
Achievement, 2005; and 2004 John Gallegos Endowed Fund Scholarship, 2004.
His career plans include being ".part of the next generation of experienced
dam safety officials."
