Core Courses at Boise State

Core courses provide students with a broad educational experience that establishes a foundation and a wider context for more advanced study in the major field.

The general-education core curriculum is fundamental to Boise State’s mission. Preparing educated, literate people for careers and participation in society is accomplished, in part, as students gain foundational knowledge in English, the arts and humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences and mathematics. This breadth of knowledge in a variety of disciplines is essential for people living in a constantly changing world, for knowledge alone is not enough; students must also acquire certain skills while completing their general-education requirements.

Critical thinking and problem-solving strategies, communication skills in a variety of modes and contexts, and an awareness of diverse intellectual and cultural perspectives are all outcomes achieved by successful students. Acquiring these skills and others enables students to become educated citizens who will actively contribute to and participate in society.
