ECE Graduate Policies
Admissions-
Regular admission to the Master’s programs at Boise State is granted based on: 1) the applicant having an ABET accredited BS degree in EE, CompE, or ECE, 2) notable undergraduate performance and/or excellent post-graduate performance, 3) GRE (no minimum scores are set for admission) scores, 4) reference evaluations/letters, and 5) general graduate school (http://www.boisestate.edu/gradcoll/) and College of Engineering (http://coen.boisestate.edu/index.asp) admission requirements. Exceptions to these admission policies follow.
Exception 1- Boise State College of Engineering graduates are not required to take the GRE or to submit letters of recommendation.
Exception 2 - Admission to the Master’s programs at Boise State may also be granted to applicants holding a related BS degree, e.g., physics, materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, etc., that covers the basic engineering physics, sciences, and math with bridging coursework, e.g. ECE 210, 225, 230, 288, 322, 332, 350, and 360.
Exception 3 - Admission may be granted either provisionally or with regular status to applicants holding a BS degree in EE, CompE, or ECE that is not accredited by ABET. However, at the beginning of their first semester after admission these students will be required to take the Sophomore Outcomes Assessment Test, SOAT, to assess their background. Based on the results of the SOAT additional coursework may be required that will not count towards a Masters degree.
Students applying for admission with an ABET accredited BSEET degree (engineering technology) will not be admitted into an engineering Masters program at Boise State. However, these students can apply for admission to the BSEE program.
Assistantships-
Departmentally-funded assistantships are given to fulltime, regular-status (not provisional) graduate students studying at Boise State (generally not to new/incoming students). To be considered please email Brittany Rotert with the following info:
(1) Name
(2) Student ID
(3) Number of credits in which they are currently enrolled
(4) Specific interests in research area, class, or professor
Graduate Thesis and Project Grading-
All graduate thesis and project credits will be graded Pass/Fail with an IP (In Progress) grade given until such time as the student successfully defends or withdraws from the program.
Policies concerning non-lecture graduate courses in ECE-
590, 592, 594, 595, 598 - credit not allowed towards meeting graduate degree requirements. 596 (independent study) - no more than three semester credits aggregate can be used in a graduate program (and only after approval by the student’s advisor and the department chair). To add a section of ECE 596, the student must complete the application form for independent study at: http://www.boisestate.edu/gradcoll/ by clicking on the “Forms” menu item on the left side of this webpage.
Once the form has been signed by the professor, advisor, and program coordinator, the student should bring it to the ECE office, ET 240, where a digital copy will be added to the student's file and the original will be forwarded to the graduate dean. The grad college will process the application and add the appropriate section of ECE 596.
Practicum/Internship-
When taking ECE590, students must send their faculty advisor weekly emails summarizing what they are doing in their internship and write a 15 page final report (5 pages per credit if taking less than 3 credits).
The industry supervisor will be required to provide a written evaluation of the internship. Internships are graded Pass/Fail. Note that a graduate intern is expected to perform at a higher level than an undergraduate intern.
International students in the College of Engineering planning to participate in a full-time internship must:
· demonstrate significant progress towards his/her degree (to be determined by supervising professor/advisor)
· have completed at least 24 credits, unless otherwise approved by the supervising professor/advisor
· be eligible to graduate within the year
· limit the full-time internship to one year
For questions concerning international student participation in internships please direct questions to Christy Babcock Quintero at the International Programs Office at 426-2660 or cbabcoc@boisestate.edu
