ECE Undergraduate Policies

 

Audits:              Students are allowed to audit ECE (electrical and computer engineering) courses. To convert the course to a graded course satisfying degree requirements, the student must re-register for the course and take it (again) fully participating in the course. The past audit will not affect what is expected of the student the second time.

 

Area I/II breadth/depth policies:

The following sequence of courses satisfies the university core depth requirement.

 

ECON 201 and ECON 202

PHIL 101 and PHIL 201

HIST 101 and HIST 102

HIST 111 and HIST 112

HIST 201 and HIST 202

HUM 207 and HUM 208

PHIL 101 and ENGR 102

PHIL 201 and ENGR 102

 

Note that two separate foreign languages will count as breadth, e.g., SPAN 101 and GERM 101.

 

Credit for prior learning:

                        ECE will not allow credit for prior learning.

 

ENGR 120:      A new policy has been adopted by the College of Engineering regarding ENGR 120 waivers. Please view the COEN policy for more information.

 

Transfer credits:

                        Only credits earned from an ABET accredited EE (electrical engineering), ECE, or CompE (computer engineering) program and be counted towards ECE courses at Boise State and only with the department chair’s and student’s advisor’s approval. For example, credits earned in an ABET-accredited EET (Electrical Engineering Technology) program cannot be counted towards the ECE courses required for the BSEE degree at Boise State.

 

Challenging courses:

The ECE department will allow ECE 230/230L and ECE 332/332L to be challenged (with both written and oral exams) when the student can demonstrate significant industrial experience equivalent to these course’s content. No other ECE course can be challenged.

 

2nd degree seeking students:

                        Boise State policy says that all CORE requirements are satisfied by your first Bachelor’s degree. However specific ECE degree requirements in the social sciences and humanities such as COMM 101 (oral communications) and ENGL 202 (technical writing) must still be satisfied. In addition, all other ECE degree requirements must be met.

 

Internships:

                        ECE 293 cannot be counted towards the BSEE degree. ECE 493 may be used for no more than 3 credits of technical elective (it does not count as an ECE elective).

                        Students may not transfer an internship course into Boise State and have it count towards their ECE degree.

                        When taking ECE 493, students must

§         Set the internship up through the Career Center

§         Complete the online internship workshop

§         Send their faculty advisor weekly emails summarizing what they are doing in their internship.

§         Write a 15 page final report (5 pages per credit if taking less that 3 credits, as for continuous enrollment)

                        The industry supervisor will be required to provide a written evaluation of the internship on a form.

Internships are graded Pass/Fail.

 

Independent Study:

                        Only 3 credits (total) in ECE 493 (internship) and ECE 496 (independent study) can be counted towards the technical electives in the BSEE degree. Neither counts towards ECE electives. If one takes ECE 493 for 3 credits then credits taken for ECE 496 cannot be counted towards the BSEE degree. ECE 496 is graded with a letter grade (A, B, C, D, or F).

 

APPACAD 221 will be accepted as satisfying the Technical Writing requirement (currently specified as ENGL 202) for the BSEE for all students who have completed an AAS or BAS in an Applied Technology field.
