The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Boise State University is committed to providing high quality academic and career advising to students. We recognize that advising is key to your success and is an integral part of your educational experience. Many questions may be answered by reading the catalog and/or the ECE Department’s Advising Page. However, if you find you still have questions or are in need of specific advice, take the steps outlined below and see an advisor.
Incoming Freshman Online Advising and What do I take and when?
1. Be Prepared
The advising process requires two active participants, both you (the student) and your advisor. In order for an advising session to be productive, you must take active steps to be prepared. In return, your advisor can then provide specific action items and advice. To prepare for an advising session, you should take the following steps:
- Print your Academic Advisement Report
- Write out your specific questions and concerns
- Make an appointment with your advisor
2. See the Right Person
For help using BroncoWeb, questions about the University, referrals to student resources, or general registration questions, you should take advantage of the new College of Engineering Advising Center. They have peer and professional advisors ready to help in the Engineering Building, room 101. You can also call them at (208) 426-2685.
Once you enroll in the Sophomore Outcome Assessment Test (SOAT), you will be assigned to an ECE faculty member as an advisor. Your faculty advisor can help you select upper division courses and plan for graduation, prepare for a career in industry, or select a graduate program for continued study in your discipline.
3. Take Advantage of Campus Resources
There are a wide range of services and other resources available to you.

4. Start Thinking About Your Career
It is never too early to start thinking about the future. There several helpful resources intended to help you succeed in your career planning. Of course, working with your faculty advisor at the Junior and Senior level is crucial, but there are other tools that you can start using right away. For example, the Career Center offers resume help, career exploration services, counseling, and even job placement. Other resources, like the Federal Bureau of Labor’s occupational handbooks can be very useful tools to discover specific details about salary, job placement, educational requirements, and other targeted details about the discipline.
