Electrical and Computer Engineering

A semester by semester course plan is located here.

What is a specialization?
A specialization is used by students to select both ECE and Technical electives.
The specializations listed below provide some suggestions for selection of the electives.

Computer engineering
Integrated circuit design
Power engineering
Devices and processing
Signals and systems

Do I need one?
The general track, or lack of specialization, is for students who want to get a broad background in electrical engineering, or who don't have in mind a specific area of interest at this point in their careers. The advantage of not choosing a specialization is that you can select your electives from a broader range of courses than students following a specialization. A broad background gives you more flexibility to enter different career paths, without limiting you to a single one. It also gives you a perspective on how the different ECE sub-disciplines are related.

On the other hand, choosing a specialization has its own advantages. It can offer you an edge over other candidates when applying for a position that requires skills encompassed by your specialization. In addition, it can make you a likely candidate for graduate research in that specialized area.

It is important to understand that, whether you opt for the general track or you pick an ECE specialization, you will be earning the same degree, a Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering. The specialization is not displayed on your diploma, only the title of the degree and major. This gives you the choice to include your specialization on your resume only when you deem it necessary.
