Department of Materials Science & Engineering

Welcome

Steve Appleton - In Memoriam:

Our sincere condolences to Steve Appleton's family and the Micron family. Steve Appleton and the Micron Foundation have had a significant impact on the university, the College of Engineering, and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. For the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, several examples of Steve Appleton's and the Micron Foundation's strong support include providing $2M to start an undergraduate program in 2004 and the recent $13M gift to start a new PhD program.

The Department of Materials Science & Engineering (MSE) was founded in 2004 with a generous gift from the Micron Foundation. As one of the youngest MSE departments in the U.S., we have been able to recruit a high quality faculty from the ground up, who have a passion for teaching and research, and an understanding of the importance of developing well-rounded students with balance in their lives. Our faculty pride themselves on their accessibility to students, providing a private school education at an affordable state institution.

The Department has research programs in biomaterials, dna machinery, nanofabrication, semiconductors, electronic memory materials, device performance, magnetic materials, shape memory alloys, computational materials, and materials for energy applications and extreme environments. In addition to our many graduate stipends awarded through research grants, a majority of our undergraduates are also given an opportunity to work in our laboratories on funded research, helping them to finance their education and gain valuable experience.
