Bio

Don Winiecki has been a performance consultant in industry and vocational-technical education both nationally and internationally, a technical illustrator, technical writer, and developer of classroom and computer-based training for national and international corporations and the United States Navy, Army and Air Force. Dr. Winiecki is a full-time graduate faculty member in the IPT Department and an adjunct faculty in the Sociology Department at Boise State University.

Research

My current research projects include different facets of my stream of research on subjectivity and subjectification as an outgrowth of different types and contexts of inspection, measurement and evaluation processes. This research is being developed for communication and dissemination in different ways for different audiences.
• Analysis of the process of generating computer models of social behavior. Computer modeling is common in the contemporary practice of natural sciences but owing to increases in easily accessible computer power and micro-economic theory, has only recently become viable in the social sciences. However, there is no unified social science theory set that may inform the production of these simulations. Since the products of social simulations are used in industrial, military and political contexts – with potentially sizable impact on social systems – it is relevant to investigate the logic, processes, assumptions, outputs and uses/outcomes of these models. This project will proceed in an ethnographic case study framework. As such it will not produce widely generalizable findings but rather detailed description of the intellectual archaeology and genealogy of factors through the lifespan of computer social simulations as practiced by professional researchers.
• Alternative means to communicate social science research. I am pursuing a project to investigate alternative means to communicate the findings of my own research and that of selected social science fields. This includes changes in the way I teach, involvement in service organizations such as the Committee on Practice, Applied and Clinical Sociology through the Pacific Sociological Association and through alternative presentation media. This is in part prompted by the view that people who are not professional social scientists are among those best positioned to make and/or lead social change, and that publication of research in conventional social science journals almost categorically misses this group. Thus, with an interest in influencing (but not being the leader of) social change in various facets of society by communicating with people who are not professional social scientists, this project aims to inspect and learn how to communicate research through alternative means.
• Study of the 'open source' software phenomenon. The intent of this research will be to pursue many distinct sub-projects involving (a) social organization of the movement, (b) ideological, philosophical and political orientation of the movement, (c) production and instantiation of power, knowledge and subjectivity in distributed activities, (d) economic factors and impacts of the movement, among other things.
