Interim Dean Amy Moll and Civil Engineering Assistant Professor Sondra Miller were underwater repeatedly today for the 1st annual Dunk the Dean New Student Social on the Engineering Patio at noon. Students, faculty and staff donated $124.75 to engineering student scholarships for the chance to dunk the dean.  Incoming freshman, Dan Galvin, CE, won the HP 50g graphing calculator in a drawing from the 70 student names who completed the online freshman engineering survey.

Lots of Activities Planned for Bronco Welcome

Bronco Welcome is a 10-day series of events Aug. 19-28 to welcome new and returning Boise State students to campus. Activities are designed to engage, inspire and educate new students about the opportunities available through campus programs and initiatives.

Friday, Aug. 26 (Today)

Time Capsule Installation. 3-4 p.m. East Side of the Student Union. ASBSU is ready to install a time capsule for 2011. A time capsule from 1967 will be opened at the same time and refreshments will be served.

Women’s Soccer: Bronco Invite Tournament (Day 1), Boise State v. Eastern Washington. 5 p.m. Boas Soccer Complex (south of campus). Cheer on the Lady Broncos as they face competitors from the Northwest. The soccer complex is located south of campus at the intersection of Oakland and Highland.

Movie Night with Sorority and Fraternity Life. 8:30-11 p.m. Centennial Amphitheatre. Watch a movie with members of Boise State’s sororities and fraternities. Everyone is invited.

 

Saturday, Aug. 27

Service Saturday. 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Meet in the Student Union Hatch Ballroom. Find out about local nonprofit agencies and participate in a community-building project of your choosing. Volunteering is a great way to get involved, meet people and help others on and off campus. Breakfast will be provided, so come hungry. Sponsored by Volunteer Services Board.

Downtown Day. 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Eighth Street, Downtown Boise. Explore the Capital City Public Market in the heart of Boise. A lively, colorful atmosphere, the market features a wide variety of vendors, including locally grown produce, handmade goods, music and more. Show your Bronco ID and get discounts at local businesses. Shuttles will be leaving from campus.

Boise State Fair. 5-8 p.m. Student Union Patio. Come one, come all — the fair has come to Boise State. Visit the Student Union Patio for games, food, prizes and rides. This event is free for students with Boise State ID and $5 for nonstudents. Celebrate the end of the first week of classes, meet new people and have a great time. Presented by the Student Programs Board.

Sunday, Aug. 28

Bronco Welcome Rafting. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Meet at Outdoor Program Office, Student Recreation Center. Cost is $30. Experience the great outdoors, meet new people and learn about some of Idaho’s premier recreational opportunities. The river location has been chosen with both novice and advanced rafters in mind. During the seven-mile stretch of the main Payette River, the group will run Class II & III rapids. Register by 5 p.m. Aug. 24 at rec.boisestate.edu or visit the Rec Center.

NASA Day at Boise State will open the “final frontier” for faculty and students to share research and ideas with the university community and with VIPs visiting from NASA’s Johnson Space Center on September 20, 2011 in the Jordan and Simplot Ballrooms in the SUB. JSC’s experts will share their experiences and insights into the enterprise and challenges of exploration. Presentations and discussions will include space and earth sciences research, human and robotic spaceflight, space and distance medicine, astronaut and employee selection and training, international cooperation, NASA student opportunities, and the active engagement of history.

This conference will be open to all Boise State students, faculty and staff, and should be especially attractive to people interested in science, engineering, business management, social sciences, education, and health sciences. Details to follow!

Looking for Someone? Check out the COEN Office Moves

During the summer some of the COEN offices relocated. The Department of Construction Management is now located in ET 338. The Department of Materials Science & Engineering is now housed in ET 201. Associate Dean Janet Callahan and her assistant Norma Kindall are now in the dean’s office area in ET 301. The Department of Civil Engineering has moved to the first floor of the Environmental Research Building. Stop in and say hello to Lori Garza, the new administrative assistant in Civil Engineering.

2nd Annual Construction Leader Lecture Set for Sept. 22nd

The Department of Construction Management invites you to its second Construction Leader Lecture to be held September 22, 2011 at 5 pm in the Lookout room at the BSU Student Union Building. The speaker will be Gregory A. Howell, P.E., M.S.C.E., co-founder and managing director of the Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a nonprofit organization devoted to production management research in design and construction. Howell brings 35 years of construction industry project management, consulting and university-level teaching experience to LCI. Howell’s topic will be: “Lean Construction: a Revolution in Design and Construction.”

Howell’s expertise in improving productivity has resulted in consulting engagements on power plants, petro-chemical facilities, commercial and industrial buildings, and infrastructure projects in North and South America and Africa. Howell has taught in construction management executive programs in numerous U.S. universities, including his alma matter Stanford, and in South Africa. He will provide a brief history, make some key distinctions and reflect on the lean transformation occurring in design and construction and its implications for education.

Following Howell’s lecture, a reception will be held at 6 pm at the Stonehouse in Boise.
