The U.S. Department of Energy’s Wind Powering America is unrolling a new program, called Wind for Schools (WfS), initially in six states: Idaho, Colorado, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska and South Dakota. Building on our existing wind energy research programs, Boise State University has been selected to be Idaho’s Wind Application Center.

The rapid technological advances that characterize modern society drive up the demand for more engineers and scientists every year. This is particularly true in regions of the country where businesses, educational institutions, and the local government cooperate in a constant quest for technological innovation and optimization. Boise State University’s College of Engineering works with industry and government partners to achieve these goals by providing ongoing research opportunities for students interested in discovering and mastering the technologies of the future.

Since the establishment of the College of Engineering in 1997, researchers have been awarded grant funding totaling over $30 million. This level of funding has allowed our faculty to establish world class research programs in areas ranging from satellite propulsion to molecular electronics. Research funding has been provided from a variety of public and private sources, including the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency, Federal Aviation Administration’s Centers of Excellence, National Aeronautic and Space Administration, and the Department of Defense.

COBR

Center for Environmental SensingThe Idaho State Board of Education (SBOE) has also established three major research centers in the College of Engineering. The Center for Environmental Sensing was established to bring together the expertise of researchers across campus and across the nation to develop miniaturized, low-cost sensors to monitor environmental events. The Center for Orthopaedic & Biomechanics Research (COBR) is a collaborative effort between the departments of mechanical engineering and kinesiology at Boise State, along with local clinicians with an interest in performing and supporting biomechanics research.

The Center for Materials Characterization will focus research in materials science, electrical engineering, physics, biology, chemistry and geosciences.

The College of Engineering at Boise State University has been selected as a partner to participate in two new Federal Aviation Administration Centers of Excellence (COEs). The COEs are partnerships formed between the universities throughout the country, the FAA, other government organizations and industry affiliates. The team members coordinate research and development (R&D) in areas of aviation technologies that are critical to the agency's mission and long-term vision.

Research labs are the heart of any research project. Visit our links below to explore the variety of research opportunities available in the College of Engineering.
