Safety Training
There are many different components to safety training in the College of Engineering, including a variety of types of online training, hands-on training in the lab, and classroom training. The following table will provide an overview of what training is recommended or required by various groups that work or study here in COEN.

> College of Engineering Emergency Response Guide
The COEN Emergency Response Guide is a both a training document and a real-time reference document to be accessed in the event of an emergency. The guide borrows significant content from the Boise State Emergency Response Guide where possible. However, the guide was written specifically to suit the needs and activities of the College of Engineering. Thus, you will find contact information, building evacuation maps, AED location, etc that is relevant to those who work and study in the College of Engineering.

The guide is available online here on the intranet on the COEN Emergency Response webpage. From there, you can either access the guide in its entirety or browse by topic. The guide is also posted on the EHE Safety Training website for assignment to those who work and study in the college’s research and teaching labs.
Lab safety manuals provide lab-specific information on safety training, engineering and administrative controls to promote safety for the activiies and processes of the lab.
Lab safety manuals are both a training tool (they have been uploaded to the EH&E training site for this purpose) and are available in hardcopy in the lab safety notebooks within each lab.
All research and teaching labs are to have lab safety manuals. If your lab does not yet have a manual or has one in need of revision.
Lab procedures are an important tool in ensuring lab tasks are conducted in a safe and rigorous manner. Lab procedures should provide information on the “technical” aspects of a particular task while also providing important safety information on protective personal equipment (PPE), engineering controls and admiinstrative controls needed.
Note: While lab procedures have been appended to the main section of many lab’s Lab Safety Manual, it is recommended they be developed as standalone documents for lab safety documentation that is currently underway. Also, it is recommended that the COEN procudure template below be used for the development of new lab procedures.
In the ideal case, existing procedures would be rolled into the new format as time permits. It is recommended the PI consider the new template for those procedures that have significant safety content and/or significant revision.
Template: Click hereto download the COEN Lab Procedure template. the content is merely an example; adapt as appropriate for your lab process. If you have any questions on how use the template, please contact the COEN Safety Liaison.
Also, procedures have been developed for general lab tasks that are used across the university. Please click here to access a procedure website set up by EH&S. this website provides a list of SIOPs created by EH&S, COEN and other entities across campus that you may use directly or adapt to your particular need.
> Boise State EH&S Online Safety Modules
Almost all online training is done through the Boise State EH&S Safety Training website. Much of the training is provided through a sub-contract with EH&E. EH&E have produced a series of standard training modules wide variety of lab safety topics. These modules serve to provide an general understanding of topic through a relatively brief training session. Following each training module, a multiple choice test is given.
Below is a list of topics offered by EH&E.
| Acrylamide | Gel Electrophoresis |
| BSU Safety Guidelines | Hazard Communication |
| Biosafety | Hazardous Waste |
| Bloodborne Pathogens | Laser Safety |
| Cell and Tissue Culture | Lead |
| Centrifuge | Lockout Tagout |
| Chemical Hygiene Plan | Noise Protection |
| Compressed Gases | Record Keeping |
| Confined Space Awareness | Regulated Medical Waste |
| Electrical Safety | SPCC |
| Emergency Action Plan | Shipment of Dangerous Goods |
| Ethidium Bromide | Ultraviolet Light |
| Fall Prevention | |
| Flammable and Combustible Liquids |
Training is administered on the Boise State EH&E training website at https://www.ehetraining.com/.
Administrators can login by clicking on the Admin Login link at the upper right of the window.
Additional information on how the system works, administrator guide and user guide can be found below:
EHE Department* Administrator Guide
* Remember, in the current system, the word department reflects a College of Engineering lab or complex of labs.
Contact the COEN Safety Liaison or the EHS Lab Safety Officer for COEN if you have any questions regarding how to get set up or use this site.
> EH&S Lab Safety Training Class
Within the first week or two of each semester, EH&S will provide one or more lab safety classes. This class is a general class intended for a relatively diverse audience of lab workers across the campus. Nonetheless, this class is very worthwhile and it is recommended that every PI require their research staff attend at least one of these sessions.
> CPR, AED, First Aid
CPR, AED and First Aid training is provided at the Rec Center. Having a population of CPR, AED and First Aid trained people serves to provide a solid foundation for a safe environment in the College
CPR and AED certification must be renewed annually while first aid certification lasts 3 years. The class is broken into a morning class of CPR-AED class and an afternoon class for First Aid.
Typically, classes are offered on Fridays and Saturdays several times across a semester. Contact the Rec Center front desk at 426-5664 to learn more about signing up. Faculty and staff typically are able to take classes at a discounted rate or fees may be waived entirely.
Also, the Boise State Rec Center can set up special class to train your staff, department, organization. To schedule we will need two weeks’ notice and a class size between 8 and 12 participants. Contact the Rec Center at 426-1311.
Please contact the COEN Safety Liaison if you have any questions or comments relating to safety in the college or content on this website.
