Call to order
Esther Contreras called to order the weekly meeting of the SHPE at 4:05 p.m. on September 13, 2010 in the Cataldo Room.

Roll call
Esther Contreras conducted a roll call. The following persons were present: 10 members with 1 officer present.

Members introduced themselves: saying their name, major, and using a word starting with the first letter of their names to describe themselves.

What is it?
The SHPE conference is the major event for the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, Inc. and the largest technical and career conference for Hispanics in the country. It attracts over 5,000 engineering professionals, students and corporate representatives.

What is its purpose?
The conference is an opportunity for engineering companies and corporations to recruit top talent from SHPE membership. It also provides educational, technical and career opportunities for professional and student engineers.

Service Saturday
When: September 18.2010 @ 9 A.M.
Where: Meet us at the SUB dining stage
How: Pick one of 4-5 service projects at local charitable or non-profit agencies to volunteer for 2-3 hours.

Fundraising Ideas
Car Bash (people pay to hit an old car to relieve stress/frustration/anger)
Tamales sale (SHPE members gather to make tamales and sell them to the public)
Dace (hold a dance night at Pan y Vino, Boise Café, or other, and charge ~ $5/person)

LSAMP Program
Emily Flores was a guest speaker and talked about the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Program (LSAMP)
Goal: to increase pathways for underrepresented students while strengthening their interests in STEM fields.
Opportunities: tutoring, mentoring, career building, summer internships, career and graduate school preparation.
LSAMP Open House: Tuesday September 28th from 4-5:30pm in the cultural center (2nd floor of the SUB)

HENAAC Conference
Where: Lake Buena Vista Florida
When: October 7-10th 2010
Registration $150 ends September 30, 2010

Resume Workshop
Alex Guiterrez came to speak about how to make an engineering resume. He gave us advice on what should and shouldn’t go on a resume. Additionally, he informed us what we need to do during an interview and what we shouldn’t do.

Some ideas for fundraising include a hot chocolate sale in November, but we must get in contact with the kitchen and have a proposal in to the dean by October 15

Community Service
Trick or Treat fundraiser. Pass out flyers in a neighborhood Oct. 22 and pickup the food Oct. 25.

Outreach
Planning on attending an FHLA meeting to recruit high schoolers and interest the in STEM fields.
Diana Ornelas is to get in contact with companies so that we can have company tours.

CAMP (college assistant migrant program) visit to recruit.

Regional Retreat, Saturday Oct 16th, discussed breakfast and lunch options.

Into the Streets: October 23, 2010 from 9-1pm
Mayra will be the site leader. Silvino, Esther, Arnold, and maybe Eric will be attending and meet at the sub.

Trick or Eat: Oct 22 – Oct 25
We will pass out flyers Friday Oct 22 at 7 pm and collect Monday Oct 25 at six pm. Meet @ sub.

Outreach
CAMP Class: Diana, Silvino, and Mayra will talk to the CAMP class about SHPE to recruit.

FHLA: Rafa will get in touch with Luis Caloca to set up an appointment where SHPE can talk to the FHLA club.

Company Tours: Diana will get in touch with Bureau of Reclamation.

Noche de Ciencias: Friday November 5, from 6-9pm.
Discussed forming committees to plan this event and Esther will send out an email with further information.

Into the Streets
October 23, 2010
Free breakfast, includes 3 hours of volunteering at a chosen agency (10 am – 1pm)
Mayra Estrada will be our site leader. Mayra told us about the different projects and the group chose to volunteer at El Dorado.

Winter Orientation Season
There will be a SHPE information table at one of the student orientations in the Simplot Ballroom.
Rafael, Esther, and Diana will volunteer at the orientation for Thursday December 9, 2010 (9:30 – 10:20 am)

SHPE Updates
Professional Development workshop next meeting on Thursday November 11, 2010.

The Materials Science and Engineering department at Northwest University (Illinois) offers a 9-week undergraduate research. Apply by Feb 15, 2011. Go to http://mrsec.northwestern.edu/content/educational_programs/reu.htm for more info.

BSU Updates
Advising and academic enhancement office is giving out $500 in book store certificates if you complete their survey.

Reminder for Rafael and Diana that Dec. 9, 2010 is winter orientation from 9:30-10:20 am in the Simplot Ballroom

At the end of this semester, Esther is planning an off campus social/potluck at someone’s house. If you would like to volunteer your place let Esther know.

There will be an end of school year dinner recognizing the most outstanding member and officer. There will also be an academic excellence award.

Group fundraising ideas were discussed. Ideas included: tamales sale, hot chocolate and pastries sale, marketing a local business, recycling inkjet and laser cartridges, scratch cards, eBay auction, cans drive, car wash, and garage sale.

3. RLD Conference –

Voted for either a basketball game or a movie night social and BB game was agreed upon. So this Thursday at 7:05 pm there is a game against Hawaii and Thursday February 10 there is a game against Fresno also Saturday Feb 12 there is a home against IDAHO. Which one would you like to go to? TELL US!

8. Navy Visit

Greg Martinez and Helen Barnes were our guest speakers but could not make it.

Thanks to Monica Del Toro the club found out what the McNair Program is all about.

1. Internship Workshop
Anne Evans, Assistant Director of Internships & Student Employment from the Career Center visited and gave a workshop on internships and research experience. She also gave us some tips on interviews and other advice.

You can get credit for most internships, but the experience is what matters.

Networking is important in finding a job or internship. Connect with everyone and clean up your Facebook because employers will look you up.
